Can anyone recommend a good book on fly fishing?

... it's my mates birthday and he's into fishing and wants to find out a bit more about fly fishing and particularly what flies are best for catching what fish. Can anyone recomend a comprehensive and easy to understand guide. ... and please don't suggest 'Fly fishing' by J R Hartley, it's not funny. 10 points to the person who's suggestion I chose.

  4. What a bummer, just as I was going to say "Fly fishing " by J R Hartley, never mind, thanks for the 2 points anyway !
  5. Try: Fly fishing for trout in Missouri, by Chuck Tryon. It's very informative. You can try John Gierach. I love him!!!!
  6. Fly Fishing by William Hartnell.
  7. Well, right now I'm reading 'No Hatch to Match' By Rich Osthoff. It's a very informative book that covers a wide variety of things you should know when there's no hatch to match. It covers how the temperature will induce trout to feed and it covers temperatures for all seasons. Then it then it tells you about the lifestyle and habitat of most of the commonly fished trout in America. Then covers all the tactics for fly fishing like nymphing and streamers. And there's even a section that talks about the most commonly fished flies and tells everything about them. There's allot more than that. 8. By the slang term "mate" I'm going to assume you are British? A book on fly-fishing America would be "pointless" then. I'm guessing you would want something a bit more "local"? A suggestion: Wait to hear what Pheasant Tail & Sagefisher might add; they are the resident "pro's" on Fly-fishing. Another suggestion: Perhaps an "antique" book on the subject would be of more interest? Other than "gear", flyfishing hasn't change all too much in over 60-100 years. Plus an antique book looks good on a coffee table! (lol)
  9. There are two books actually that would be good for you: The Classic Guide to Fly Fishing for Trout by Charles Jardine. It is a book written in England, and has a good overall presentation. Also: Tom McNally's book on Fly Fishing. It is written for the states, but is a good book nonetheless. Hope you find what you are looking for....
